This is a 50 minute podcast of audio oddities: excerpts from pirate radio station broadcasts, time and frequency broadcasts, tv and radio continuity announcements, numbers stations, home-made records, phone phreak recordings, things taped off of shortwave radio, etc. No music this time, but I will be back late summer-early fall 2010 with some great new underground pop music from unsigned artists all over the world. NBT-4-CNP (Next Big Thing For Cut And Paste) is an incredibly tuneful, energetic recording, and is loads of fun to listen to! For a little more info on the band I thought I would include what they wrote for their press release:

Here’s the Story…..

SHANE FAUBERT pioneered New York City’s garage-pop explosion with The Cheepskates.
GARY PIG GOLD started up Canada’s very first music fanzine
“The Pig Paper.”
JEREMY LEE joined with The Cheepskates right after auditioning for
The New Monkees.

Then Gary moved to New York upon releasing the “Valentino’s
Pirates” album on Russia’s Melodiya label.

Shane asked Gary to help produce two of his solo albums,
“San Blass” and then “Squirrelboy Blue.”

Meanwhile, Jeremy found a Cajon drum while shopping in his local
music store.

so Finally,

Tired of sitting around waiting for that Next Big Thing to appear,
Shane invited Gary, Jeremy, and the Cajon over to his house,
they took out some guitars, opened their mouths,
and out came the sounds Cut And Paste now bring to your house!

now,
If you’d like to see, hear, and know even more,
please visit
www.tomlou.com/nextbigthing.html

So, to add my personal note here...if there are any indie labels out there interested in actually releasing this album to a much wider audience, please visit the band's web site and get in touch with them! This is one of the best indie releases I've heard in a long long time, and it really deserves a huge audience.

In the meantime...it's available for $5 ppd. from Cut And Paste! Make checks or money orders payable to Ray Carmen (not Cut And Paste Records). Cash is accepted but please cover it well. Send all your hard-earned moolah to :

Cut And Paste Records 2996 Upham Dr Akron OH 44319 USA. Get it! Got it? This new reissue features seven bonus tracks: two from Don Campau's PEN PALS 3 project, and one from Carmen's ULTRA SOUND release, and four songs which were re-recorded for Ray's OLD SCHOOL, OLD FOOL release. Ray's power-pop sensibilities and Don's incredible guitar playing and punky vocals make this a perfect match on songs like Alone On The Bus, Little Angel and the title track. True to the title, this release now gathers are all of Don and Ray's collaboations to date.

Track list:

Original 2004 release:

1. All Of It (2:31)

2. Spinning In My Grave (2:53)

3. Use Of Force (4:11)

4. Little Angel (3:02)

5. Alone On The Bus (3:23)

6. Ideals (3:36)

2009 bonus tracks:

7. Duet For Inside Piano And Mixing Bowl (3:21) (from ULTRA SOUND)

8. Trial By Fire (3:02) (from PEN PALS 3)

9. Grown Man Cry (2:46) (from PEN PALS 3 and OLD SCHOOL, OLD FOOL)

10. Spinning In My Grave (3:00) (from OLD SCHOOL)

11. Ideals (3:54) (from OLD SCHOOL)

12. Little Angel (3:19) (from OLD SCHOOL)

13. Trial By Fire (3:18) (from OLD SCHOOL)

As always, the cdr comes with a lyric sheet, and is packaged in a plastic sleeve, and it's five bucks postage paid.

Ultra Sound makes best of list

My ULTRA SOUND disc from 2008 made Don Campau's Best Of 2008 list for his No Pigeonholes radio show in Cupertino, California. The Wowsermen Stomp (3:02)

The band are: Chick Wowser - vocals and rhythm guitar, Junior Wowser - vocals and lead guitar, Bud Wowser (er, that's me) - vocals and drums. Our stand-in bass player, Wowie Wowser, handled the low end. If you like the sound of the Beatles circa The Star Club in Hamburg Germany 1961, mixed with the abandon of The Trashmen, and 60s Merseybeat, then you'll dig The Wowsermen. To hear a couple of tracks (before Wowie put down the bass parts...), go to our MySpace page: www.myspace.com/thewowsermen. To order a copy of WOW!, send $5 to Cut And Paste Records, POB 152, Green, OH 44232 USA. Pics and local gigs coming soon...we're excited!

The Wowsermen on MySpace

My new band (well, it's not my band, per se, but I'm in it) The Wowsermen are now on MySpace, with two tunes...and the above logo. Pics and an ep release will be forthcoming. A Teeny Weeny Bit, and Dontcha Just Know It were slammed out during practice a few weeks ago. Don't expect pristine sound quality, but the two featured songs are--in my opinion--a helluva lot of fun! Imagine The Beatles and The Trashmen sharing a bill at the Star Club in Hamburg, Germany in 1961, and you'll get a pretty fair idea of what we sound like. Listening back to it now after all these years, I'm embarassed by some of the lyrics (though I won't say which ones...). But I also think some of my best songs are on here (Monster, Changes, Obsession, Prize Possession, Leaving Well Enough Alone), so I guess it's six of one, half a dozen of the other. LOL

Track listing:

1. Ray’s Day Off (1:30)
2. Monster (4:35)
3. My Own Company (2:50)
14. Not Just No, But Hell No (2:11)
15. Leaving Well Enough Alone (5:37)
16. Nothing More To Say (1:30 am) (3:29)
17. Monster (Accidental version) (4:22)
18. Too Old For Angst (early instr. take) 3:00)
19. Nothing More To Say (Accidental version) (3:20)
20. Ray’s Day Off (guitars only mix) (1:20)

Instruments and vocals by moi, with help from the following kind folks:

Ken Clinger - keys (5, 8), production (2); Blind Waldo - fiddle (4).

All songs written by me and published Radio Friendly BMI, except:

(4) unknown, (5) Carmen-Clinger, and (8) Clinger, which are copyright control.

Tracks 1 thru 5, 7 thru 11, and 16 were released on cassette in 1997.

Tracks 6 and 12 thru 15 were released on the NOVEMBER cassette in 1999.

Tracks 17 and 19 were released on the ACCIDENTALLY ON PURPOSE

cassette in 1996. Go to http://www.raycarmen.com/ for ordering info at the bottom of the page!

Happy Krimble, and don't forget...O-U-T spelss OUT!!

Ray

Er, here's a blast from my past...

OK, so I googled my name today (don't look at me like that, you know you've googled your own name, too), and came across this:

http://diycassettemusic.blogspot.com/2008/02/ray-carmen-more-than-enough-1991.html

This was from back in the day, when the cassette underground was in full swing. I, like many others, put out tons of cassettes, and this particular one was a bunch of remixes (hence the title) and an unreleased (at that time) track, called More Than Enough. I recorded it for my NOTHING PERSONAL CD, but the record company (Emigre) rejected it (hrummph!--actually, I can't blame them, it's not one of my better songs). Anyway, one of my fave underground bands, Hermanos Guzanos, posted this online back in February. Thanks for the plug, guys!

Ray

PS...one of my friends told me that this track sounded to him like a cross between Badfinger and Sonic Youth...

Wayside Waifs Christmas compilation CD out soon

A great new compilation of Christmas tunes will be released to help benefit the Wayside Waifs Humane Society of Kansas City, Missouri. This was taped a couple of weeks ago (Chick's on vacation this week, the lucky bastard), and I have to say I sound like a dork (as usual), but I had a lot of fun bugging Chick and constantly pestering him to play Neko Case. You can also listen online at www.913thesummit.com.

In other news...I have tried three times to upload my latest home made podcast (that's podcast #9 for those of you keeping score at home), but to no avail. So, I'm sending it off to my pal Ken Clinger, and he's going to give it a shot. I'll keep yas posted...

Starting January 2009 I will unleash The Cut And Paste Records Singles Club. How this works is, you sign up via email, and every month in 2009 I will email you two mp3 tracks of my music. It will be a mix of various album tracks, new stuff, rough mixes, alternate takes, instrumental versions, etc. Sometimes I might send out three tracks, for a sort of email ep. I'm debating whether or not to mock up covers to go with each month's selections--it depends on how much time I have. It's free, and all you have to do is send me an email at cutandpasterecords@yahoo.com, and put "Cut And Paste Singles Club" in the subject heading.

Hope you're all having a great summer.

Podcasts now available for purchase.

Just wanted to let you know that episodes 2 through 8 of the Cut And Paste Records online podcasts are now available for purchase through me, for $2.00 each postage paid. Now I've expanded it to two discs, with the original release on disc one, and five instrumental mixes on disc two.

My original intention was to make an instumental mix of the entire release, but that wasn't possible for several reasons. Instrumental mixes for both CPL and What It Was About could not be located--if, in fact, they even exist. The work tapes for those tracks, as well as Voice Of Free China, seem to have disappeared.

Some of the tracks would sound ludicrous without their samples. For example, the backing track for Fat Bottomed Bulgarians is nothing more than a drum sample played on a cheap Casio sampler. Numbers doesn't have a backing track. Kick 'Em In The Ass has a backing track, but my guitar playing is so bad on that track I decided not to inflict it on anyone anymore than I already have. The radio samples on Kathie Davis were inadvertently (ie. accidentally) bounced onto the music tracks, and could not be seperated.

In any case, HANGER 18 is not an album of pop songs. It's an album of atmospheric tracks with found sounds as "vocals". It's goofy, and definitely not for everyone, but I do think it's kinda fun to listen to...

Tracks:

DISC ONE
(original release)
CPL (6:55)
Lead Zeppelin (5:05)
7-1-90 (4:24)
Abducted (3:29)
Fat Bottomed Bulgarians (2:56)
Hanoi Hanna (6:04)
Numbers (1:32)
Kathie Davis (3:18)
Kick 'Em In The Ass! (2:14)
Voice Of Free China (2:18)
What It Was About (4:44)
Elizabeth Appears (12:40)
In The Last Days (3:51)

DISC TWO
(instrumental mixes)
7-1-90 (4:14)
Abducted (2:52)
Lead Zeppelin (5:05)
Hanoi Hanna (basic backing track) (5:50)
Elizabeth Appears (excerpt of Ken Clinger backing track) (5:05)

And, even though it's a 2-cd set, it's still only five bucks postage paid.

Also available in the reissue series:
NAIVE ASSUMPTIONS, DUET YOURSELF, BUBBLEGUM BUDDHA,
and HOPES AND FEARS.

"Grace" gets airplay on Europe's Radio Marabu

Hey folks,

My instrumental tune Grace recently received
airplay on Europe's Radio Marabu, courtesy of my
friend (and musical collaborator), DJ Don Campau. Just what you've been waiting for. :)

Remastered/reissued versions of BUBBLEGUM BUDDHA and HOPES AND FEARS are now available, with color covers, lyric sheets included, and packaged in clear plastic sleeves.

BUBBLEGUM BUDDHA actually had to be remixed and then remastered (three times) before I finally got it sounding...ok. Even so, My cover of Jackie DeShannon's When You Walk In The Room still sounds like crap, although I managed to somehow make it sound less like crap than it did. Now it just sounds like it was mixed through a very tiny early 60s transistor radio. :) For some reason my engineering skills during this period were less than perfect, let's just say...

It was originally released as a 9-song cassette in 1993, and then issued as a 15 song cdr several years later. BUBBUD still features all 15 songs, but has been totally remixed--almost radically so on a couple of songs.

Track listing:

1. Rise And Shine (Carmen)

2. Out Of Your Hair (Carmen)

3. Jealousy (Carmen)

4. When You Walk In The Room (Jackie DeShannon)

5. Too Much Coffee (Carmen)

6. Rain On The Road (Carmen)

7. Between You And Me (Carmen)

8. More Than Enough (Carmen)

9. I Knew You So Well (Carmen-Clinger)

10. Beach Blanket Bookmobile (Carmen)

11. Vanquished (Carmen-James St. Vrrain)

12. Leaf Of Absence (Carmen)

13. Black Cloud (Carmen)

14. Going Home (Carmen)

15. Rain Reprise (Carmen)

HOPES AND FEARS was written and recorded with my friend Ken Clinger. It didn't present any problems soundwise since it was recorded and produced by Clinger at his Bovine Studios set-up. The only difference is that our Beatles cover Here There And Everywhere was taken off when it was first issued on cdr (I thought my vocals were too schmaltzy, and I was right--they are). I have added it back to the track listing, although it is now track number five instead of eleven (figuring let's just get it over with sooner rather than later :) ). The only other difference is that the sound bites of my late grandmother have been removed from the track Open Your Eyes (I had edited them in very sloppily on the original master. I cannot find the original source tape to re-edit them back in).

Track listing:

1. When Will I Ever Learn (Carmen-Clinger)

2. Better Off Alone (Carmen-Clinger)

3. Fly (Nick Drake)

4. I Knew You So Well (Carmen-Clinger)

5. Here There And Everywhere (Lennon-McCartney)

6. She Says (Carmen-Clinger)

7. Open Your Eyes (Carmen-Clinger)

8. I Know You Know (Carmen-Clinger)

9. Junk (McCartney)

10. I Enjoy Being A Boy (In Love With You) (Levine-Bellack)

11. Train Loop (Clinger)

12. One More Day (Carmen-Clinger)

Both releases are now available for $5.00 each postage paid. Send cash, check or money order to the usual place: Cut And Paste Records, POB 152, Green, OH 44232. Please make checks payable to Ray Carmen, NOT Cut And Paste Records.

Up next will be the 2-disc reissue of HANGER 18. Disc one will be the original album, and disc two will be instrumental remixes without the samples and found sounds. H18 should be ready within the next month or so, I hope.

New 3-track ep and 18-track best-of available now dammit!!

Out right this minute is a brand new 3-track ep called BIRTHDAY. This twenty minute release features two tracks from my forthcoming ambient/experimental release to be called ULTRASOUND. Grace is a Cocteau Twins-inspired shoe-gazing instrumental with audio excerpts from my daughter's sixth birthday party. Driving is a ten minute-plus piece written and performed with my pal Ken Clinger. Think of it as a movie soundtrack to listen to while rolling down the turnpike late at night. The third track is an early instrumental mix I made of Grace while I was working on it.

The other new release is an 18-track best-of entitled AFTER WORK AND ON WEEKENDS: TWENTY YEARS OF HOME RECORDING, 1986-2006. This release picks up where OBSCURITY KNOCKS left off, and covers a wider time-span. It was supposed to have been released last year but I didn't have time to compile it until now.

Here's what's on it:

1. It Must Be Hard (Carmen) 2:07
2. Pure Love (Campau) 2:20
3. Still In Love With You (Bowman) 3:08
4. Mama Talkin’ Blues (Carmen-Schmitz) 0:53
5. DUET contains eleven originals and two cover tunes (Sweet Young Thing and You Just May Be The One, both Monkees tunes). This was my first album-length cassette (all my previous cassettes were eps), and was originally released by the Ooh Ooh Music cassette label in North Canton, OH, which was run by my friends Mike Gonzalez and Julia Devine. The original cover art was horrible (lifted from a magazine ad for a books on tape company). The new cover art features a picture taken by my friend Mike Crooker (of the GGE Records label, who released my early eps) during a photo session for my NOTHING PERSONAL cd, which Crooker also produced, and was being recorded for the Emigre label in Sacramento, CA at the time.

The music, as usual, runs the gamut from power pop to bubblegum, from avant-garde blues to autumnal ballads, from fake industrial noise to fake film music.

This one continues to be a favorite 27 years later...

The track listing is as follows:

1. Passive/Aggressive - 4:11

2. Brand New Boyfriend - 3:37

3. The Weight - 3:24

4. Beckoning - 2:44

9. Ode To Jandek - 3:14

10. Summer's Day - 2:37

11. The Fall - 3:07

12. I Know A Secret - 3:23

13. Fast Asleep - 2:07

All songs were written by me and published by Radio Friendly BMI, except

track 4, which was written by Mike Nesmith, and track 6 which was written

by Mike Nesmith, Gerry Goffin and Carol King, and were published by

Screen Gems-EMI Music. All instruments and vocals by moi, and was

recorded at home on an old Fostex four-track cassette deck, with no

mixing board, in 19889-1990. I'm surprised it sounds as good as it does.

Thanks to Mike Crooker, and Rudy at Emigre, as a few key tracks from this

cassette were re-recorded for NOTHING PERSONAL.

It's available for $5.00 postage paid. Send a check or money order payable

to Ray Carmen and send to: Cut And Paste Records, POB 152, Green, OH,

44232, USA. Cash will be sent at your own risk. And please don't make checks

or money orders payable to Cut And Paste Records, since it will only get me

funny looks at the bank, and I'll have to send it back.

More info, including online liner notes, will be posted soon.

Coming soon will be the remixed/remastered version of 1993's BUBBLEGUM BUDDHA.

Lydia Tomkiw, R.I.P.

I found out yesterday afternoon that a friend of mine from several years ago passed away. Her name was Lydia Tomkiw, and she was the lead vocalist for the art pop duo Alegbra Suicide. Her partner in Algebra Suicide was guitarist Don Hedeker.

I met Lydia back in the late 80s/early 90s when I managed (and I use that term loosely LOL) a Kent, OH based band called Indian Rope Burn. IRB's guitarist Mike Crooker produced my NOTHING PERSONAL album for Emigre in 1991. Anyway, IRB opened for Algebra Suicide, and we call got to know Lydia and Don quite well. They were wonderful people and Lydia was a real sweetheart (and Don was a shit-hot guitar player!). I still have my vinyl copy of their album THE SECRET LIKE CRAZY, which Lydia very sweetly signed "To Ray, one who manages well".

After Algebra Suicide broke up, Lydia went on to pursue her poetry, and solo music career (see the cover to her solo CD INCORPORATED above), while Don went on to form other bands, including the Ramones-influenced Bouncing Balls, and The Polkaholics, a rock-n-roll polka band!
WMFU's online blog has a blurb about Lydia here: http://blog.wfmu.org/freeform/2007/09/algebra-suicide.html. There is also a video of their signature song, Little Dead Bodies.

Thanks to my friend Mike Crooker for passing this info along to me.

NAIVE ASSUMPTIONS reissue now available

The remaster/reissue of NAIVE ASSUMPTIONS is now available.

NAIVE ASSUMPTIONS is a collection of my first four-track recordings from 1988-1989. It has been issued in various configurations on cassette over the years, and was until recently available on cdr as a two-fer with DUET YOURSELF (which was from 1990). I always felt that listening to both albums back-to-back on the same cdr was a bit much to sit through, so I decided to reissue both NAIVE and DUET as seperate albums with corrected/updated track listings.

The reissue of NAIVE has thirteen tracks (two of which are instrumental mixes), and is packaged in a clear plastic sleeve, with a fold-out color cover, and a lyric sheet insert.

The Cut And Paste Records Podcast#6 is now online

The Cut And Paste Records Podcast#6 is now online, and for this program I had
help from my special guest DJ...my 5-year-old daughter Grace! Bowman is back with a brand new best-of compilation for Cut And Paste. It's called Don't Forget The Cheese: MJB '89-'92, and it's being released under his new moniker Velveeta Heartbreak.

When I ran out of his Plastic Memories cdr for my mail-order catalog, I asked MJB to send me some more copies, and instead he compiled this new best of, and it's sweet. These 16 awe-inspiring tracks were recorded at home, and originally released on cassettes. Here's the track listing:

1. Alaska (2:50)

2. Seven Rays (4:34)

3. Psychedelic Afternoon (3:15)

4. Take A Trip (To The Other Side) (2:53)

5. The Apartment (3:09)

6. Walkman (3:42)

7. Dissolving Youth (2:26)

8. Cocktail Time (3:34)

9. Dressed To Kill (4:17)

10. Beach Ball (1:57)

11. The VJ Said (2:54)

12. The Dalai Lama Loves You (2:45)

13. The Rabbit Soldiers (1:52)

14. Sleepytime At Mission Control (2:53)

15. In My Head (3:50)

16. Brighter (2:11)

All songs/sounds/instruments/vocals by MJB, with a little help from Paul Rose, who played guitar on Alaska and In My Head, and Arak, who played bass and acoustic guitar on Take A Trip.

As always, it's $5.00 postage paid from Cut And Paste. Stevie Moore, Don Campau and Ken Clinger.

It's the usual pretentious crap you've come to expect from me...ambient sound collages run head-first into gooey psychedelic bubblegum pop, tribal rhythms bump into electronic folk music, children's songs trip over autumnal ballads, and ghostly acoustic pieces stumble over guitar-based power-pop. It's kinda like a typical kindergarten recess period.

Miraculously, no one was hurt.

There's a few bum notes here and there (some critics might refer to that as carelessness,I refer to it as "charm"), and as usual it was recorded on 4-track cassette (see, I really am old school...) so fidelity is pretty much a moot point, but I still think it's rather enjoyable. It doesn't rock exactly, but it sure snaps, crackles and pops.

The songs are:

1. Zero Zero Zulu (Carmen) - 2:54
2. Gather (Clinger-Carmen) - 3:47
3. Little Angel (Carmen-Campau) - 3:17
4. I Told Her Everything (Carmen) - 3:33
5. Ideals (Carmen-Campau) - 3:52
6. Grown Man Cry (Carmen-Campau) - 2:44
7. Spinning In My Grave (Carmen-Campau) - 2:58
8. No Matter (Carmen-Clinger) - 2:21
9. Little Clockwork Man (Carmen-Clinger) - 3:10
10. Lost A Friend (Carmen) - 2:18
11. Leaves Of Absence (Carmen-Clinger) - 3:03
12. Slow Chimes (Carmen) - 1:35
13. Trial By Fire (Carmen-Campau) - 3:18
14. Big Mistake (Carmen-Moore) - 5:12

And it's available for a measly $5 postage paid from me at: Cut And Paste Records, POB 152, Green, OH 44232 USA. Please make checks or money orders payable to Ray Carmen, not Cut And Paste Records. It's called Rewind And Pause, and it includes a track of mine called "It Must Be Hard" from my Pop Victrola cd. The track was recorded and overdubbed entirely on a dual cassette deck in mono in 1986. It sounds like shit, and it's a classic. Other artists include Don Campau, Ken Clinger, Big City Orchestra, Hal Magee, Dino Dimuro, R. Stevie Moore, Heather Perkins, Lord Litter, MJB, and many others.

If you are not familiar with the early years of the home taping underground, this is a very good palce to start. This is a beautiful and stunning 2-cdr compilation (and not just because I'm on it ;) ), and you can order a copy by going directly to the Lonely Whistle Music web site: http://lonelywhistle.tripod.com/lwcatalog/.

The Inay

My good friend Dani from The Inay (www.inay.info) very kindly posted three excerpts from my cdr Too Old For Angst. Dani's home recording project The Inay has just released his first cd which I am quite anxious to hear. The Inay makes some of the most beautiful pop sounds I have ever heard, drenched in atmosphere and meloncholy, and you can hear tracks from the album at his website. You can also check out his page at MySpace: www.myspace.com/theinay. And tell him Ray sent ya!

As for my music, well...my new solo album is almost done. I have thirteen tracks mixed and ready to go, with maybe one more on the way. Upcoming projects include remixed and remastered versions of Duet Yourself and Naive Assumptions, a Cut And Paste Records best of, as well as a Cut And Paste Records podcast, and Lord knows what else, depending on what I have time for.

Again, don't forget to check out The Inay. You'll be glad ya did.

Welcome

Hey kids...

Welcome to the new Cut And Paste Records News Blog. From now on, whenever I have news to share I will do it here instead of having to pester Ken Clinger to post it for me. Ken already has enough to do periodically updating my web site as it is.

So...here's what's happening.

2006 marks my 20-year anniversary making music. I didn't actually start hurling crap onto the unsuspecting public until 1988, but I began recording in 1986. So, in celebration, as it were, I will be releasing a new album called Old School, Old Fool, hopefully this summer. I have 12 tracks ready for it, but I would like to record one or two more. Also in the works is a Cut And Paste Records best-of, a re-edit and re-release of my Picture Start video, a Cut And Paste podcast, a new album from my band Kinski Spiral tentatively titled Antenna Farm, and a few other things.

In the meantime, may I remind you that Kinski Spiral has a new three-song ep out called Kinski Kovers, featuring our versions of Martin Newell's "Let's Get Married", Devo's "The Day My Baby Gave Me A Surprise", and Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze". Even though it's an ep, we're gonna sell it as a single, so send $2 to Cut And Paste Records, POB 152, Green, OH 44232 USA. Make checks or money orders payable to Ray Carmen (not Cut And Paste Records, or I'll have to send it back).

And don't forget our MySpace pages: www.myspace.com/raycarmen, and www.myspace.com/kinskispiral . I also have a music review blog at: http://cutandpaste.mindsay.com .

Ok, well, that's about all for the moment. I'll be updating this regularly, so stay tuned.

Ray Carmen/Grand Poobah, Cut And Paste Records,
and 1/3 of Kinski Spiral.
www.raycarmen.com
