A brand-new best-of called Provocative Repercussions is out now.

Featuring fourteen tracks recorded over the past ten years or so, Provocative Repercussions is a best-of culled from songs recorded solo, in collaboration with other artists, and with Kinski Spiral. It was pressed and shrink wrapped by Kunaki.com, and the awesome cover and label art was done by my good friend Jeanne Snodgrass. I think this is a really nice collection of songs, and a good place to start for anyone (meaning almost everyone on the planet) who isn't familiar with what I do. And it's available for $5.00 ppd.

WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?! reissue out now

My first demo tape, What The Hell Is That?!, was recorded entirely on a Technics dual cassette deck in 1986, overdubbing back and forth between tapes until I had completed 11 tracks. The album is in mono and full of hiss. MUCH of this make me cringe, to be honest, and when I first put it out on cdr I deliberately left off two tracks. Well, being the dummy I am, I put them back on and have reissued it again, so here it is. Keep in mind, some of this is pretty damned lame, but there is a certain charm to some of the songs, most of which I went on to re-record on 4-track cassette (at home of course) and/or in an 8-track reel-to-reel studio for my Nothing Personal cd (Emigre, 1991).

I'll be playing The International Pop Overthrow festival in Cleveland this weekend...

I will be playing a half hour solo set as part of the International Pop Overthrow festival this year. This will be the first year the festival will be in Cleveland, and I will be opening the second evening which is being held at the Beachland Ballroom in Lakewood, OH. I will be playing from 8:00-8:30 pm, and I will be assisted by my friend Doug Wofsey on electric guitar.

Originally released in 2004 as a six song ep, ALL OF IT features Don Campau and Ray Carmen taking turns providing backing tracks for the other to write lyrics and add vocals to. This new reissue features seven bonus tracks: two from Don Campau's PEN PALS 3 project, and one from Carmen's ULTRA SOUND release, and four songs which were re-recorded for Ray's OLD SCHOOL, OLD FOOL release. Ray's power-pop sensibilities and Don's incredible guitar playing and punky vocals make this a perfect match on songs like Alone On The Bus, Little Angel and the title track. True to the title, this release now gathers are all of Don and Ray's collaboations to date.

OK, so I googled my name today (don't look at me like that, you know you've googled your own name, too), and came across this:

This was from back in the day, when the cassette underground was in full swing. I, like many others, put out tons of cassettes, and this particular one was a bunch of remixes (hence the title) and an unreleased (at that time) track, called More Than Enough. I recorded it for my NOTHING PERSONAL CD, but the record company (Emigre) rejected it (hrummph!--actually, I can't blame them, it's not one of my better songs). Anyway, one of my fave underground bands, Hermanos Guzanos, posted this online back in February. Thanks for the plug, guys!

HANGER 18 2-disc reissue available now dammit.

Originally released as a five track cassette in 1991 under the monkier "Mayhem Steamroller" (ha ha ha), HANGER 18 eventually found its' way to cdr in 1998 with eight additional tracks. Now I've expanded it to two discs, with the original release on disc one, and five instrumental mixes on disc two.

My original intention was to make an instumental mix of the entire release, but that wasn't possible for several reasons. Instrumental mixes for both CPL and What It Was About could not be located--if, in fact, they even exist. The work tapes for those tracks, as well as Voice Of Free China, seem to have disappeared.

Some of the tracks would sound ludicrous without their samples. For example, the backing track for Fat Bottomed Bulgarians is nothing more than a drum sample played on a cheap Casio sampler. Numbers doesn't have a backing track. Kick 'Em In The Ass has a backing track, but my guitar playing is so bad on that track I decided not to inflict it on anyone anymore than I already have. The radio samples on Kathie Davis were inadvertently (ie. accidentally) bounced onto the music tracks, and could not be seperated.

In any case, HANGER 18 is not an album of pop songs. It's an album of atmospheric tracks with found sounds as "vocals". It's goofy, and definitely not for everyone, but I do think it's kinda fun to listen to...

Jim Jones, 1950-2008

I found out yesterday that longtime Pere Ubu and Home And Garden guitarist Jim Jones died at home on Monday, February 18, 2008.

I never knew him, but I saw him play live, not just with Pere Ubu but also with Home And Garden, and as a guest guitarist with the Peter Blegvad Trio when they played a club in Lakewood, OH several years ago.

I emailed him afterwards and he responded right away and talked as if we had known
each other for years. He was a sweetheart of a guy, and I'll miss him.

BUBBLEGUM BUDDHA and HOPES AND FEARS reissues now available

I know. Just what you've been waiting for. :)

Remastered/reissued versions of BUBBLEGUM BUDDHA and HOPES AND FEARS are now available, with color covers, lyric sheets included, and packaged in clear plastic sleeves.

BUBBLEGUM BUDDHA actually had to be remixed and then remastered (three times) before I finally got it sounding...ok. Even so, My cover of Jackie DeShannon's When You Walk In The Room still sounds like crap, although I managed to somehow make it sound less like crap than it did. Now it just sounds like it was mixed through a very tiny early 60s transistor radio. :) For some reason my engineering skills during this period were less than perfect, let's just say...

It was originally released as a 9-song cassette in 1993, and then issued as a 15 song cdr several years later. BUBBUD still features all 15 songs, but has been totally remixed--almost radically so on a couple of songs.

HOPES AND FEARS was written and recorded with my friend Ken Clinger. It didn't present any problems soundwise since it was recorded and produced by Clinger at his Bovine Studios set-up. The only difference is that our Beatles cover Here There And Everywhere was taken off when it was first issued on cdr (I thought my vocals were too schmaltzy, and I was right--they are). I have added it back to the track listing, although it is now track number five instead of eleven (figuring let's just get it over with sooner rather than later :) ). The only other difference is that the sound bites of my late grandmother have been removed from the track Open Your Eyes (I had edited them in very sloppily on the original master. I cannot find the original source tape to re-edit them back in).

Out right this minute is a brand new 3-track ep called BIRTHDAY. This twenty minute release features two tracks from my forthcoming ambient/experimental release to be called ULTRASOUND. Grace is a Cocteau Twins-inspired shoe-gazing instrumental with audio excerpts from my daughter's sixth birthday party. Driving is a ten minute-plus piece written and performed with my pal Ken Clinger. Think of it as a movie soundtrack to listen to while rolling down the turnpike late at night. The third track is an early instrumental mix I made of Grace while I was working on it.

The other new release is an 18-track best-of entitled AFTER WORK AND ON WEEKENDS: TWENTY YEARS OF HOME RECORDING, 1986-2006. This release picks up where OBSCURITY KNOCKS left off, and covers a wider time-span. It was supposed to have been released last year but I didn't have time to compile it until now.

DUET YOURSELF remaster now available

The next reissue is my 1990 album DUET YOURSELF, which has been remastered and includes one extra track. DUET contains eleven originals and two cover tunes (Sweet Young Thing and You Just May Be The One, both Monkees tunes). This was my first album-length cassette (all my previous cassettes were eps), and was originally released by the Ooh Ooh Music cassette label in North Canton, OH, which was run by my friends Mike Gonzalez and Julia Devine. The original cover art was horrible (lifted from a magazine ad for a books on tape company). The new cover art features a picture taken by my friend Mike Crooker (of the GGE Records label, who released my early eps) during a photo session for my NOTHING PERSONAL cd, which Crooker also produced, and was being recorded for the Emigre label in Sacramento, CA at the time.

The music, as usual, runs the gamut from power pop to bubblegum, from avant-garde blues to autumnal ballads, from fake industrial noise to fake film music.

This one continues to be a favorite 27 years later...

Lydia Tomkiw, R.I.P.

I found out yesterday afternoon that a friend of mine from several years ago passed away. Her name was Lydia Tomkiw, and she was the lead vocalist for the art pop duo Alegbra Suicide. Her partner in Algebra Suicide was guitarist Don Hedeker.

I met Lydia back in the late 80s/early 90s when I managed (and I use that term loosely LOL) a Kent, OH based band called Indian Rope Burn. IRB's guitarist Mike Crooker produced my NOTHING PERSONAL album for Emigre in 1991. Anyway, IRB opened for Algebra Suicide, and we call got to know Lydia and Don quite well. They were wonderful people and Lydia was a real sweetheart (and Don was a shit-hot guitar player!). I still have my vinyl copy of their album THE SECRET LIKE CRAZY, which Lydia very sweetly signed "To Ray, one who manages well".

After Algebra Suicide broke up, Lydia went on to pursue her poetry, and solo music career (see the cover to her solo CD INCORPORATED above), while Don went on to form other bands, including the Ramones-influenced Bouncing Balls, and The Polkaholics, a rock-n-roll polka band!

NAIVE ASSUMPTIONS reissue now available

The remaster/reissue of NAIVE ASSUMPTIONS is now available.

NAIVE ASSUMPTIONS is a collection of my first four-track recordings from 1988-1989. It has been issued in various configurations on cassette over the years, and was until recently available on cdr as a two-fer with DUET YOURSELF (which was from 1990). I always felt that listening to both albums back-to-back on the same cdr was a bit much to sit through, so I decided to reissue both NAIVE and DUET as seperate albums with corrected/updated track listings.

The reissue of NAIVE has thirteen tracks (two of which are instrumental mixes), and is packaged in a clear plastic sleeve, with a fold-out color cover, and a lyric sheet insert.

Velveeta Heartbreak: Don't Forget The Cheese

Michael J. Bowman is back with a brand new best-of compilation for Cut And Paste. It's called Don't Forget The Cheese: MJB '89-'92, and it's being released under his new moniker Velveeta Heartbreak.

When I ran out of his Plastic Memories cdr for my mail-order catalog, I asked MJB to send me some more copies, and instead he compiled this new best of, and it's sweet. These 16 awe-inspiring tracks were recorded at home, and originally released on cassettes. Here's the track listing:

New album OLD SCHOOL OLD FOOL out now

After working on this thing for God knows how long, I have finally molded (or pounded) this into a shape where I can listen to it without my wince muscles getting a workout (much). Old School Old Fool is a 14-song release featuring new tracks as well as re-recordings and re-workings of tracks I did with R. Stevie Moore, Don Campau and Ken Clinger.

It's the usual pretentious crap you've come to expect from me...ambient sound collages run head-first into gooey psychedelic bubblegum pop, tribal rhythms bump into electronic folk music, children's songs trip over autumnal ballads, and ghostly acoustic pieces stumble over guitar-based power-pop. It's kinda like a typical kindergarten recess period.

Miraculously, no one was hurt.

There's a few bum notes here and there (some critics might refer to that as carelessness,I refer to it as "charm"), and as usual it was recorded on 4-track cassette (see, I really am old school...) so fidelity is pretty much a moot point, but I still think it's rather enjoyable. It doesn't rock exactly, but it sure snaps, crackles and pops.

Rewind And Pause

Lonely Whistle Music has just released a compilation of music made by hometapers spanning the years 1981-1998. It's called Rewind And Pause, and it includes a track of mine called "It Must Be Hard" from my Pop Victrola cd. The track was recorded and overdubbed entirely on a dual cassette deck in mono in 1986. It sounds like shit, and it's a classic. Other artists include Don Campau, Ken Clinger, Big City Orchestra, Hal Magee, Dino Dimuro, R. Stevie Moore, Heather Perkins, Lord Litter, MJB, and many others.

If you are not familiar with the early years of the home taping underground, this is a very good palce to start. The Inay

My good friend Dani from The Inay (www.inay.info) very kindly posted three excerpts from my cdr Too Old For Angst. Dani's home recording project The Inay has just released his first cd which I am quite anxious to hear. The Inay makes some of the most beautiful pop sounds I have ever heard, drenched in atmosphere and meloncholy, and you can hear tracks from the album at his website. As for my music, well...my new solo album is almost done. I have thirteen tracks mixed and ready to go, with maybe one more on the way. Hey kids...

Welcome to the new Cut And Paste Records News Blog. From now on, whenever I have news to share I will do it here instead of having to pester Ken Clinger to post it for me. Ken already has enough to do periodically updating my web site as it is.

So...here's what's happening.

2006 marks my 20-year anniversary making music. I didn't actually start hurling crap onto the unsuspecting public until 1988, but I began recording in 1986. So, in celebration, as it were, I will be releasing a new album called Old School, Old Fool, hopefully this summer. I have 12 tracks ready for it, but I would like to record one or two more. Also in the works is a Cut And Paste Records best-of, a re-edit and re-release of my Picture Start video, a Cut And Paste podcast, a new album from my band Kinski Spiral tentatively titled Antenna Farm, and a few other things.

In the meantime, may I remind you that Kinski Spiral has a new three-song ep out called Kinski Kovers, featuring our versions of Martin Newell's "Let's Get Married", Devo's "The Day My Baby Gave Me A Surprise", and Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze".
